How Switching to a VoIP Phone Line Affects Your Security System

cell1

Here’s a question we get often, “Will switching to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone service affect my security system monitoring service with Asheville Security Systems?”

Short answer: YES!!! If we monitor your home through your landline, then yes! Since you no longer will have a working landline with VoIP, we can’t monitor your home to send help if the system’s alarm goes off.

It’s the equivalent of not updating your contact information—it’ll render your security system worthless.

When switching to VoIP here’s what you need to do to ensure your security system is monitored by our security station,

Consider your other monitoring options

Because you’ll no longer have a landline, you’ll need to consider how we can monitor your home by other means.

You have two options:

  1. Wireless/cellular monitoring —Communicates to monitoring station via cell towers.
  2. Internet/IP monitoring—Communicates to monitoring station using the internet.

“Which monitoring option should I get?”

We always recommend wireless monitoring first. It uses a wireless GSM and CDMA (Global System for Mobile Communications, Code Division Multiple Access) dev1ice with backup battery so it works even if the power goes out (unlike internet monitoring).

Also it carries more data at greater speeds compared to Internet monitoring, meaning it sends a quicker signal to our security monitoring station.

“What new security equipment will I need when switching to a VoIP phone line?”

The security equipment you need depends on whether you get internet or wireless monitoring. Talk to one of our security consultants, and we can help you
